School Memories Mini Album

Graduation is not just about students. It’s also about those who play a role in helping those students reach that goal of graduating. Teachers, educators, professors, coaches and more.

Let’s be honest…this blogger sitting at her laptop typing today’s blog post probably would not be where she is today if not for all the teachers that took care of her over all the years. Their roles were diverse….grade school to high school, dance teachers, gymnastics teachers, cheer coaches to college professors.

“One looks back with appreciation to the brilliant teachers, but with gratitude to those who touched our human feelings. The curriculum is so much necessary raw material, but warmth is the vital element for the growing plant and for the soul of the child.”
Carl Jung

Designer Ginny Hughes created a unique album that is a gift for her daughter’s teacher. Consider making one that you include all the students in the class photos and maybe a note from each student. {This would also make a wonderful gift for someone retiring from any profession.}

I love the EC Frayed Flowers so much and the Clover (green) ones are definitely my fave.  They come in a pack of 3 flowers and each flower has 3 layers. I like to separate the layers and create 9 flowers from the sets of 3. On this projects, I used the middle layer of one of the Clover EC Frayed Flowers to create an apple to embellish this altered mason jar pencil holder. I cut a leaf and stem from scraps of felt fabric and hot glued the elements directly to the jar. This is a fast and simple gift with a bit of country/vintage flair.

Altered Yarn Pencil Can by Designer Jennifer Priest

Epiphany Crafts Supplies:
EC Frayed Flowers in Clover
EC Pennant 25 Shape Studio and Bubble Caps
EC Round 14 Shape Studio and Bubble Caps

Other Supplies:
Stamps by Kaiser Craft
Paper by Echo Park Paper
Yard by Red Heart
Can from Oregon Cherry Pie Filling
Ribbon by hydrangeahippo.etsy.com
Candy by Hershey’s
Felt by Joann’s Fabrics
ScorTape by Scor-Pal
Ink by ColorBox

Instructions:

This pencil cup is really easy and affordable to make –the bonus is the kids can actually help create this for their teacher! I washed an empty tin can out and sanded the inside lip to make it smooth. I applied ScorTape around the can in a spiral and started wrapping the yarn tightly around the can from the bottom to the top.

I then applied a line of hot glue around the top of the can to hold the end of the yarn down and applied a strip of red ribbon to cover the glue. I then added a bow with the same ribbon to cover the seam with the ends of the ribbon met.

I applied the EC Frayed Flowers in Clover to the bottom of the can, separating the flowers from one another. I added a “stem” and “leaves” to the felt “apples” using scraps of felt. I stamped the letters to spell the word “teach” on a scrap of book style paper and create letter charms using the Epiphany Crafts Pennant 25 and Round 14 Shape Studios. I then hot glued these to the can. These could be used to customize the can with a teacher’s name, room number, or the grade they teach.

Next I lined the can with pencils and the filled the middle of the can with Hershey’s Kisses. We all know teachers need a little chocolate pick me up in the middle of the day sometimes!! Use a Sharpie or permanent marker to sign the bottom of the can.

Add a little bling to the center of the flower buttons. When I’m in the EC booth at the expos I always share this little idea with the ladies that love the flower button tool but don’t know if they’d use it as much since it’s a button not epoxy. It’s like getting 2 different ways to create your custom embellishments with 1 tool. Use as a button and thread string thru it or put some bling in the center and now its a cute little embellishment.

1.) First, use your fun epiphany crafts tool and matching bubble caps or button accessories to create the first part of the embellishment. Easy Peasy!

2.) Next, take your epiphany crafts embellishments you just made and the same amount of paper clips (big or small).

3.) Hot Glue the paper clip to the back of the epiphany crafts embellishment like so.

Bloom Where You Are Planted Craft

user posted image

Altered Embroidery Hoop by Designer Tessa Buys

I am blessed with some pretty amazing opportunities (like designing for Epiphany Crafts!), but like everyone else, there are circumstances in my life that are just not very much fun to work through. I’ve been trying to keep my attitude positive and the saying “bloom where you are planted” has been on my mind. I decided to create a piece of wall art featuring those words that would remind me to make the best of my challenges. Of course, Epiphany Crafts has the perfect tool for accenting this flowery phrase – the flower button!

Epiphany Crafts Supplies:
Button Studio Tool Flower 20 and Buttons
Button Studio Round 20 and Button

Other Supplies:
Embroidery Hoop
Muslin
Embroidery Floss
Felt
Flowers (Prima, PrecociousPaper.etsy.com)
Ink
Alpha Stamps

And because no flower is complete without a little foliage, I added leaves to each button flower. First, cut leaf shapes from felt. I used wool felt, which will work much better than acrylic felt because of the quality. You could also use patterned paper or cardstock.

user posted image

Next, using embroidery floss, stitch a running stitch down the center of your leaf and back again. Secure your ends with a knot on the backside of your leaf.

user posted image

If you are sewing directly onto something, like I was sewing onto muslin, you can attach your leaves to the background as you stitch your leaf veins. You could also just glue the leaves in after the fact, like I did with my larger leaves.

user posted image

How cute are the flower buttons perched on their little leaves? I love the texture the thread adds and the homespun look. When playing with the Epiphany Crafts flower tools, don’t forget those leaves!

1. Cut a rectangular piece of burlap for the base of your pocket. You can make your pocket any size you wish. Keep in mind that you need an 1 1/2″ allowance at the top and about 1/2″ at the side. My starting burlap piece is about 9″ x 8.5″.

user posted image

2. Lay a long piece of seam binding ribbon across the top edge of the burlap, then fold down 1 1/2″ and stitch along the bottom edge, creating a pocket in which the seam binding can move freely.

user posted image

3. Create three flower embellishments using the Epiphany Crafts Shape Studio Tool Flower 25, the Clear Flower 25 Caps, and the patterned paper of your choice.

user posted image

4. Die cut several different-sized circle embellishments from felt to create the flowers. You will need a 1″ scalloped circle for each flower. For the largest flower, add two larger circles and one pinked-edged circle.

user posted image

5. Stitch the flower Clear Caps to the scalloped circles using embroidery floss. For the largest circle, stitch this piece to the other layers of die cut felt. Cut small slits in the plain circle pieces. Lightly swab flowers with yellow ink. Stitch flowers in a row across the middle of the burlap. Stitch stems.

user posted image

6. Cut a piece of muslin the same size as the burlap. Fold down the top edge and machine stitch muslin to the wrong size of the burlap.

7. Fold burlap in half and machine stitch down the left side and across the bottom to create a pocket pouch.

user posted image

8. Embellish with trims across the top and bottom of the pouch. Hand embroider two leaves on yellow felt and stitch leaves to the bottom of the center flower stem.

9. Add buttons made with the Epiphany Crafts Button Studio Tool Round 14 and Round 14 Clear Button Caps to each flower stem. Tie hang tag string into a bow and add with a final button to the bottom of the central flower.
